Introduction

As part of the The Trust’s Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Policy, the Trust lists a number of things academies within the Trust will do. One of these is: “Each academy will publish their own equality, diversity and inclusion statement which ‘brings to life’ this Policy within their own setting. They will publish their own equality objectives, and review progress against these annually.”

The Co-op Academies Trust is committed to promoting equality and preventing discrimination in both employment and education provision. This is an ‘active commitment’, and part of it involves regularly reviewing our policies and practices at all levels of the organisation - a regular cycle of setting and reviewing objectives is part of this.

The Public Sector Equality Duty applies to all schools, including academies.

The general equality duty has three elements. In carrying out their functions public bodies are required to have ‘due regard’ when making decisions and developing policies, to the need to:

  1. eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation and other conduct that is prohibited by the Equality Act 2010
  2. advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it
  3. foster good relations across all protected characteristics – between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.

For schools in England, there are two specific duties that they are required to carry out. These are:

  • to publish information to demonstrate how they are complying with the equality duty
  • to prepare and publish one or more specific and measurable equality objective.

Schools need to comply with these duties from 6 April 2012 and update yearly.

Academies are expected to operate an annual cycle of ‘plan, do, review’. Generally speaking this will run in line with the academic year.

At Co-op Academy Oakwood, we’re committed to promoting equality and preventing discrimination in both employment and education provision. We will create an inclusive environment, where everyone can contribute their best work and develop to their full potential. We will celebrate the fact that everyone is different yet valued, and make sure that everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

You can read more about this below; including the actions we have already taken to advance equality, diversity and inclusion in our academy and our community, and to comply with our equality duty. We’ve also set out our equality objectives, which are the things we’re going to be focusing on this year.

Statement

Co-op Academy Oakwood strives for each and every pupil, staff member and the wider community to participate in academy life to its fullest potential; not being held back by sex, age, race, disability, religion, beliefs, sexual orientation, gender identify, pregnancy or marriage status.
