Our Intent

As a school, we aim to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping children with a strong command of the spoken and written word. We believe that developing a love of language in our children is vital in achieving success at school and in later life.

As a school, we aim to ensure that the pupils:

  • Read fluently and with good understanding
  • Develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
  • Acquire a broad vocabulary through reading a wide range of books
  • Have a solid understanding of English grammar
  • Write clearly, coherently and accurately, adapting their language and style for a range of purposeful contexts and audiences.
  • Use discussion in order to learn; our children should be able to both listen attentively and clearly explain their thinking and ideas to others.

How is it implemented?


Co-op Academy Oakwood follows the National Curriculum for English in both reading and writing. Reading and writing are connected through the use of high-quality texts as starting points for writing, which are generally connected to the current topic.


We follow the ‘Letters and Sounds’ progression for teaching phonics. All children in Reception and Key Stage 1 have a daily discrete phonics lesson which follows a clear structure. Children in Key Stage 2 who have not achieved the required standard continue to receive phonics.


Reading is taught in a variety of ways depending on the ability of the child. We also actively encourage the children to read at home in order to make the best progress.

Key stage 1

  • Children have daily guided reading sessions where they are in small groups focusing in decoding and understanding books of the appropriate level. All children read individually to an adult daily. This is their home-reading book and dialogue between home and school is encouraged through the use of a home reading record.
  • Whole class reading also occurs regularly through the week, where a teacher will read a quality book to the children encouraging them with questions about the text.

Key Stage 2

  • Children continue to have reading lessons daily with mixture of guided reading groups and whole class reading. As the children become more fluent readers, the emphasis goes towards understanding the texts at a deeper level and thinking about vocabulary more.
  • In KS2, wider reading is encouraged with ‘reading walls’. Each child has a new wall for each term of each year with the authors of books and poetry changing alongside reading to match the current topic.


All children are given writing opportunities every day and we make every effort to ensure that writing has a purpose, with the children seeing connections to real life. As with the teaching of reading, writing links either to the current topic or to the current text the class is reading. The grammar requirements of the new curriculum are integrated into writing with examples seen from real texts

What is the intended impact?

As all areas of the primary curriculum are linked together through the use and teaching of English within meaningful contexts, children can easily see the power of language and the necessity in real-life of knowing how to use English well. Our pupils leave Co-op Academy Oakwood well-equipped to continue their learning journey at their chosen high school.
